Your grandparents might have told you of the times when a drawer or an apple crate would do for a baby crib.( If they haven’t, ask them about the Depression for many interesting tales). In our modern times, co-sleeping is a popular option. Even so, baby cribs are an important feature in baby care.

Cribs are a safe and comfy environment for your baby, whether it is the place where baby sleeps exclusively, or the place your baby naps or is placed when the parent needs to leave baby for a short while (even parents of newborns deserve a bathroom break!)

Perhaps you are the lucky friend or relative of a person who has wood working plans for a crib, creating a cherished family heirloom.

If not, you will find there are as many cribs as there are people’s tastes and desires. There are the pricey Cadillac cribs that cost thousands of dollars, as well as inexpensive, safe alternatives. When browsing or buying a crib, of course safety is the first and only option. A hand-me-down crib will be totally acceptable, as long as it is checked for loose screws and a sturdy frame.

Crib mattresses should be clean and whole with no rips or tears.

Now it is time to think about crib bedding! As with the crib itself, there are as many crib sheet options as you could desire. Of course baby crib sheets donated from friends and family are perfectly acceptable. Going all the way with matching, very posh infant crib bedding sets complete with crib tent is certainly one option, but keep in mind that baby can sleep very sweetly on clean yet mismatched crib bedding. Again, the main consideration is the safety and comfort of the child.

Crib bedding sets also need to be easily washable and sturdy enough to be washed over and over again. Crib sets may need to be changed several times a day as diapers and spit-up rags are employed. It will be convenient to have sufficient baby crib bedding as backup. This should be an important consideration for those who use a Laundromat or an apartment laundry room rather than their own washer and dryer.

The crib will hold your most precious possession. Thinking of that in that context will be a good guide as you prepare to choose the crib, the sheets, the comforters and whatever else you may choose to include. The baby, in his comfy, soft cocoon may not exactly feel the love that went into the choice for his crib. Love is the ingredient that you supply.
