Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is as old as time, but it’s often still controversial: for instance, the debates about breastfeeding in public still rage.

As each mother and child is different, so are the outlooks and opinions regarding nursing. There are women who do extended breastfeeding, which is nursing a child into toddler age, but the majority of women choose to wean a baby somewhere after their first year.

Some women would never think of breast feeding in public, while others do. Those who choose to do so might throw a receiving blanket over one shoulder and nurse the baby underneath it, while some wear special clothes that allow the baby to breastfeed while the woman remains covered, and then there are some mothers who just lift up their tee shirt and shade the baby’s face while nursing. All are valid and natural acts and a person who gets unreasonably upset while noticing, in this day and age, may wish to ask themselves why they are getting so disturbed.

How to breastfeed is a question that new moms and moms to be regard with varying degrees of anxiety. Those women lucky enough to have a mother, sister, or a close friend that has been through the nursing experience already have an expert that they may take their breastfeeding problems to. In most hospitals these days, there is an RN who is the breastfeeding advisor, a coach, if you will. She will visit with the new moms, explain and guide them into the proper way to nurse. Some hospitals with their own informational channels on the televisions show educational breast feeding video presentations for the new moms to check out while in the hospital. The La Leche League is an organization that has been around for many years, and is a strong advocate for those who wish to breast feed. They are on the net, and depending on where you live, may be listed in your telephone book. They have everything from pamphlets to full-size books to educate the new Mom.

There are also many more products these days for Moms and their comfort. There are creams for sore nipples and disposable pads that soak up any leaks. These can be easily found at any store or pharmacy.

There are many proud and passionate advocates for breastfeeding. On the web you can see breastfeeding photography of mothers and babies breastfeeding. These breastfeeding pictures can be inspirational, or at least they can be a starting point for the expectant family who may have some concerns and want to learn all they can about breastfeeding.
