Baby Care
On your way to buy diapers you pass the section of the aisle that contains baby skin care products and soon you are lost. It is truly amazing how many baby care items are to be found on store shelves, and the untrained will sometimes feel that for proper infant care all or many of these products are necessary. Granted, there are quite a few items that will make your life easier and the baby’s life better, but not everything that is on the shelf is necessary and some things may actually be harmful.
First and foremost, a good baby skin care product will be advertised as being hypoallergenic, meaning that it will not irritate the child’s skin. Heavily perfumed products, such as may be found in some ethnic and general stores, should be avoided. In this case it is best to stick with the tried and true brands. While organic baby care products are supposedly better, there are some manufacturers of organic baby care products whose claims are questionable. Since the companies are small, they sometimes fly under the radar of the FDA, and thus it is best if you test the lotions, creams, and shampoos on your sensitive skin (usually the inner part of the thigh of underarm) first.
Baby day care and infant day care concerns are serious issues as well. Baby care at such institutions is geared to the young child, yet if you find a center where newborn baby care is not really differentiated from the baby care an older baby may experience, then your little one might run into problems. Crawlers and those who are mobile require different baby care and supervision than those who are still too young to hold up their heads by themselves.
Once you have baby skin care and baby day care center worries taken care of, consider if you want to buy baby care products online. You may find some great online baby care products that may not yet have hit the stores. Yet be careful! While items made for skin care for babies can be tested on you, other baby care items will require a common sense approach with respect to safety and appropriateness for the age group for which they are marketed. Similarly, if you have an HIV positive baby in foster care, you will need to speak with a counselor to find out exactly what additional needs this little one will have. Do not assume that one size fits all, just like the same brand of care item will not fit the bill for each child!
